Welcome to the website of the British International School of Stockholm, known to our community simply as BISS. With a rich educational history spanning over 40 years, we have evolved from a primary school founded in 1980 to a through school for children aged 3 up to young adults aged 18. Located in the suburb of Djursholm, north of Stockholm City, we provide a British-style education to around 500 students.
British International Education is an incredibly versatile offering. Around 30% of all international schools globally offer the British International system or a variation. This “backbone”, if you like, has a well-deserved reputation for excellence and is trusted by millions of students and their families worldwide.
What does that actually look like at BISS? Well, we place both learning and well-being at the heart of everything. Neither can exist without the other; happy people do well – people who do well are happy. They are two sides of the same coin.
Learning is our core purpose, hub, hedgehog concept, whatever you want to call it; it’s why we come to school every day. Ask our students, as I do during their lessons, “Was it worth coming in today?” Almost always, the answer is a resounding YES. I got something out of today. I learned something new. I understand that better now. They want to be here, and be happy, and do well. And they do well. Our curriculum is carefully crafted to reflect our international location and moves through to the highly regarded Cambridge IGCSE and then the International Baccalaureate diploma. Great Universities await with recent admissions to St Andrews in the United Kingdom, Toronto Metropolitan in Canada and George Mason in the USA. Of course, some students stay here in Sweden for their higher education.

What about wellbeing? It’s a term that lots of schools use. For us, it’s not just about ensuring our students are well now, it’s about educating them to make their own good choices in the future. We believe that even as young adults, our students need to build their emotional maturity, so that once they set off to make their own way in the world, they have the tools required to make that journey successful.
It’s not just our BISS community that thinks these things. We are fully Patrons Accredited by COBIS, the Council of British International Schools. Their quality assurance process supports our work and gave us a total of twenty-three commendations across their wide range of what they describe as ‘unimpeachable’ standards. This recognition fuels our commitment to continuous improvement, because my mantra is ‘Be better because we want to be’.
