Inclusion

Supporting Every Learner, Every Step of the Way

At the British International School of Stockholm, our commitment to inclusion is central to our vision and values. We believe that every student is capable of learning and deserves the chance to engage in a broad and balanced curriculum. Our teachers are dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where learning differences are not only understood but celebrated. We aim to nurture the whole child, promoting personal growth alongside academic achievement.

As a non-selective school, BISS welcomes students from diverse abilities and backgrounds. We strive to cultivate an environment of self-acceptance, where each student is valued for who they are and empowered to reach their full potential. Our approach accommodates a range of learning differences, including dyslexia, ADHD, and autism, with tailored support designed to meet each student’s unique needs. We recognise that learning styles vary, and our educators are skilled at adapting their teaching methods to align with the diverse needs of their students.

Our Inclusion Team comprises specialist teachers and learning assistants with extensive experience in supporting students with various needs. This team collaborates closely with classroom and subject teachers to eliminate barriers to learning. Support is provided both within and outside the classroom, including individualised and small group interventions to enhance literacy, numeracy, and study skills. Students are actively involved in developing personalised strategies that work best for them, fostering a sense of self-awareness as learners. Our goal is to equip students with a personal toolkit that supports their educational journey and prepares them for their future endeavours.

As an international school, BISS caters to students from a variety of linguistic backgrounds. We offer targeted support for those new to English, including small group lessons focused on vocabulary development, reading, and writing. Additional in-class support is provided to help students build academic English proficiency and gain confidence in their language skills.

We encourage parents to be transparent about their child’s needs from the beginning, sharing any relevant reports or professional advice. This partnership allows us to implement appropriate support promptly and maintain regular communication. We also collaborate with Swedish support services, such as BUP, and can refer students for further assessment with psychologists or speech therapists when necessary. External specialist services, including speech therapy, counselling, and family support, are also accessible.

While we strive to be as inclusive as possible, our capacity is primarily geared toward addressing mild to moderate needs within a mainstream setting. We have limited ability to support more complex needs that require a broader range of professional input. We accept a small number of students who need individualised support throughout the day, and this provision is considered on a case-by-case basis and funded by the parents.
